Science Night exposes mosquitoes & disease Dec. 10

The University of Wisconsin-Parkside Science Night series returns Wednesday, Dec. 10, with a program on research being done to control one of the world's smallest but deadliest killers. Titled "Of Mosquitoes & Billionaires: A VISTA on Mosquito Control and Mosquito-Borne Diseases," the program features University of Wisconsin-Parkside Biological Sciences Professor Dr. Daphne Pham.

"The mosquito has been declared 'Public Enemy #1' by the World Health Organization," Dr. Pham said. "Last year, pathogens carried by mosquitoes killed about 2 million people worldwide. Mosquito-borne diseases are among the most devastating health problems of our time."

Dr. Pham's research examines iron metabolism in mosquitoes and the role iron plays during pathogenic invasion. Her long-term objective is to understand transmission of diseases to humans by blood-feeding insects. This lecture, she said, centers on the latest thoughts about mosquito control.

Science Night's presentation "Of Mosquitoes & Billionaires: A VISTA on Mosquito Control and Mosquito-Borne Diseases" with Dr. Daphne Pham begins at 7 p.m. in room 103 of Greenquist Hall. High school and middle school students and faculty with an interest in math and science are encouraged to attend. Admission is free, parking is free after 6:30 p.m., and refreshments are served.
